IGCSE Chemistry: understanding command words
What describe, explain, state and suggest actually ask for, and how to answer each one in Chemistry.
IGCSE, Cambridge, EdexcelChemistry3 min read
Exam questions begin with a command word that tells you what kind of answer is expected. Answering a different type of question is an easy way to lose marks in Chemistry.
Common command words
- State: give a brief fact, no explanation needed.
- Describe: say what happens or what a graph or diagram shows.
- Explain: give reasons, usually with the word because, and reference to particles or energy.
- Suggest: apply your knowledge to an unfamiliar situation.
- Calculate: show working clearly; include units in your final answer.
Practise with your own papers
Highlight the command word in every past-paper question, then check the mark scheme to see what earned marks for that type of question. Definitions vary slightly between boards, so use your own board's glossary.
